September sees the beginning of an exciting partnership
with our local PCT (Primary Care Trust) that will allow BYT to work with
health services to create six projects over three years. The projects will
hone in on health issues that young people from all over Burnley consider to
be important and use dance, the visual arts, music and drama to create
performances, exhibitions and workshops that allow young people to express
view and take action towards healthier lifestyles.

A team of participants at BYT have been working with Andy Cooke from
marketing agency Positive Solutions to spice up our publicity! Over the
coming months, a new interactive website, indoor and outdoor notice boards,
flyers, pop ups …. And a nine foot high, nine foot wide cube will all appear
and be used out and about in Burnley and beyond to help us shout about all
the great work BYT does.
Gettin' Funky

We want your ideas to help shape a new project that could happen at BYT in
the future. Demand is high for BYT to develop music activities – everything
from playing instruments to singing, helping young bands to develop and
creating digital music. This project can be all of the above – we need you
to tell us what the project should be! We will make a group that will meet a
few times in September and October to make it happen! To get involved
contact Andrew on 01282 427767.
Thank you
Burnley Youth Theatre would very much like to thank Mike Faulkner of G&M

A
GLITTERING and emotional awards ceremony has honoured heroes young and old
at 2BR's sixth annual Local Hero Awards. Tearful tales of bravery,
dedication and courage were told at the prestigious event, which was at the
Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Clayton-le-Moors.
Nine local people were the stars of the night and had been nominated for the
awards by their loved ones, colleagues, neighbours or friends. The evening
was compered by the station's radio presenter Mr Ricky Kirby who introduced
each individual tale and the astonishing unsung heroes involved.
He added that the award winners were dedicated, deserving and courageous
people and extraordinary unsung heroes from
Burnley, Pendle and Hyndburn.
They were also seen as people who had gone above and beyond in the call of
duty, had battled through difficult times, or made a super-human effort in
one way or another, each one showing great character and the kind of spirit
that East Lancashire communities are built on.
Each received an engraved glass trophy and a £100 cheque presented by a
representative from the local company or organisation which had sponsored
their award category.
Each extraordinary individual was greeted with a rapturous applause on
collection of their award with the exception rewarded with an emotional but
well deserved standing ovation.
Mr Brian Roche scooped the evening's most prestigious award – Citizen of the
Year – after being presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Brave
nine-year-old Joshua Ford was the winner of the Child of Courage accolade
while his sister was presented with the Special Recognition Award.
Pendle man Mr Rob Scott is Entrepreneur of the Year, Ryan Cooper won the
Bravery Award, Jonathan Taylor scooped the Young Person Award and Ilane
Birkby won the Good Neighbour Award.
Employee of the Year was presented to Mr Gareth Davies from Burnley Youth
Theatre while fire-fighter Mr Phil Whittaker won the Public Service Person
Award.

day-long visit of the town.

FOLLOWING his visit to BCW Engineering at the
Lancashire Digital Technology Centre, Prince Charles headed for Burnley Youth
Theatre in Queen's Park Road.
On arriving at the theatre he was greeted by a dozen
well-wishers who waited at the gates waving Union Jack and St George flags.
The artistic director of Burnley Youth Theatre Andrew Raffle said: "We have
been working with young people on a lot of really good projects.
"One of our latest projects was called Not In My Name
and explored views on terrorism.
"The workshops we do here give young people a platform
to talk about the issues that affect them on a local level and it's been great
to meet the Prince and to show him what we do here."
